At Summerhill we have five separate classes for children of different ages and needs. All five classes are from Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm. Our weekly program is fully flexible, but depending on the age group the minimum days per week will vary. Please see more information on our Classes below. 

From 2pm to 3pm every day we offer After-School Activities starting from the Half-Moon Class age group and up, while the youngest Sunrise/Sunset Classes can enjoy babysitting and aftercare during the same hours.

We also offer an Extended Day Program designed for children with parents who both work, providing a relaxed environment after a day in class with creative and nature-oriented activities.

Sunrise & Sunset class

For this age group, we understand that it is usually the first time a child spends away from his/her parents, and it is truly important that this transition be made as smoothly and caringly as possible. For this reason, we have created a safe, cozy "home away from home" for your children. Our Sun Program introduces your child to a fairly structured day with stimulating activities, group interaction and the chance to be inquisitive as he or she begins to talk, walk and explore. Curriculum activities, monthly themes and experiences are based on real-world sensory experiences. We spend a big part of the day singing, dancing, laughing, playing and exploring, indoors and out. These activities encourage interaction with other children to develop important social skills. Furthermore, our curriculum gradually introduces key concepts that build literacy, using Alphabet Cards, stories and daily activities. With music, books, age-appropriate toys, movement and creative projects, learning is always exciting. The primary difference between the Sunrise and Sunset Classes is that during Circle, Art, and Play Times the children are divided for age appropriate activities. 



Sunrise Class: 15 months - 2 years old
Sunset Class: 2 - 3 years old


The teacher-child ratio in the Sunrise Class is 1:4, and 1:6 for the Sunset Class.



A prerequisite for the Sunrise Class is the ability to walk alone. For the Sunset Class the children have to be 2 years of age by August 31. In the Sunset Class, the children receive toilet training before they can move on to the Moon Class.


For the Sunrise Class we offer a 2-5 day program, while the Sunset Class is a 3-5 day program.

Half & Full Moon Class

Our Moon Program teaches essential reading, writing, math, science and social skills in a logical, natural sequence that encourages children to learn, one step at a time. Monthly themes, weekly topics and daily activities teach key academic skills while encouraging children to explore and understand the world they live in. In this particular age group, our reading readiness program is focused on developing letter recognition skills. Literacy is enhanced with the use of Alphabet Letter Books and other engaging activities such as Library Time, when the children are gathered in the Quiet Corner to read or look at picture books that encourage language skills for both beginning and advanced readers. Our proven 5-day, multi-activity routine emphasizes art, music, dramatic play and social interaction, all of which aim to develop curiosity, creativity and self-esteem. We divide the children into small groups within the class so that each child always receives individual attention and can work at his/her own pace. Our goal is to help each preschooler build enough confidence to realize, "I can do it!" The primary difference between these two classes is that in Full Moon Jolly Phonics is introduced. In addition, during Circle Time, the children participate in age appropriate activities. 


Half Moon Class: 3 - 4 years old
Full Moon Class: 4 - 5 years old


The teacher-child ratio in the Half Moon Class is 1:7 and 1:8 in the Full Moon Class.


For Half Moon the prerequisite is that the children are potty-trained and 3 years of age by August 31, and 4 years old in the Full Moon class.


For the Half Moon Class we offer a 3-5 day program, whereas the Full Moon Class is a 5 day program.

Star Class / Kindergarten

This is the final stage of our comprehensive preschool program and constitutes our Kindergarten program. In the Star Class, concepts such as reading and math become progressively more advanced. It is still play-based learning, but our Star Program is geared to fully prepare the children for their next big step - to enter kindergarten or first grade. Our hands-on, literacy-based program concentrates on letter recognition and phonics. Monthly themes and weekly activities further your child's development in math, science and social interaction. Star Class children's inquisitive minds are kept stimulated with Arts & Crafts projects, Nature Walks, singing, dancing, story-telling and our Dress-Up Corner, where children are free to act out the events of their daily lives or their imaginations. For this age group, we keep in mind the rigorous competition when entering the few, prestigious international schools in Tokyo. Summerhill staff and teachers will put your mind at ease by staying in close touch with you, guiding in placing your child in the institution of your choice. Our pre-school programs are proven to develop the skills and confidence necessary in order to breeze through any expectations made by the entrance boards of these institutions.

Being the Kindergarten program we recognize that children will soon be entering schools that have a range of expectations for a child's social and academic performance. The class provides a comprehensive, child-centered approach that, while challenging, also works to support all areas of the child’s individual development. Our program maintains high expectations not only for the children’s academic achievement, but also for their social development. Nonetheless, the class recognizes that not all children learn in the same way, and is tailored to help each child grow according to their own pace. Through the use of a balanced, multi-sensory curriculum that includes the development of literacy skills, mathematics, science, social studies, art, movement, music, and drama, students will leave the class enthusiastic, active learners. 


5 - 6 years old


The teacher-child ratio in the Star Class / Kindergarten is 1:8.


For Star Class / Kindergarten the prerequisite is that the children are 5 years of age by August 31.


The Star Class / Kindergarten is a 5 day program.


Summerhill Baby

Summerhill Baby is our very own baby daycare for infants & toddlers, housed under the same roof as our preschool but open to everyone.

Summerhill Baby accepts infants from 3 months old to toddlers up to 15 months, providing a "room to bloom" for our very youngest age group - a safe, cozy haven where our caregivers shower your child with lots of love and cuddles. 

A 1:2 caretaker-to-child ratio and a maximum of 8 children ensures that each child gets the love and attention they need. 

Summerhill Baby was designed to make a parent's life a little easier, offering flexible scheduling and a "one roof" solution for babies with siblings already enrolled at Summerhill. 





With a strong emphasis on the natural environment, this program makes science come alive and encourages children to experiment, observe, record, describe, question, and form explanations and conclusions. It stimulates a child's sense of wonder and challenges a child's problem-solving skills, allowing him/her to explore and communicate the mysteries of the forces, properties, and principles of the world around him/her. 

At Summerhill, we believe that the seed of environmental awareness should be planted at an early age, since it is in the present that we can better the future. With Environmentally-Sensitive Science, children have fun learning about all aspects of nature including the weather, plants, insects and animals. To show that anyone can make a difference, Summerhill adopts several endangered or suffering animals from wildlife organizations, and we share their growth and progress with the children. This way, Summerhill children develop a sense of care and nurturing while acquiring the basics of science.




The Readiness Program recognizes that children will soon be entering kindergartens or primary schools that have clear expectations of child readiness. The curriculum is a comprehensive approach that challenges children and supports all areas of their development. Summerhill develops expectations in concert with the few competitive international schools in Tokyo that the children will be attending.

The curriculum builds off the child's knowledge and skill base, learning style, and interests. There is a clear emphasis on the development of strong language and math skills. We create a language-rich environment in which we encourage literacy development from the youngest age by incorporating reading and writing into daily activities. Math is taught by giving children concrete experiences with counting, sorting, patterning, and problem-solving. With the Readiness Program, important social skills for school such as listening carefully, following through on a sequence of tasks, and working cooperatively are reinforced as children engage in projects and daily activities.



Summerhill acknowledges that one of the biggest assets in this day and age is being able to speak different languages. This ability opens vast opportunities and allows for the full appreciation and acceptance of other cultures. Keeping in mind the fact that most Summerhill families are here on a short-term basis, Summerhill offers an all-rounded, cultural enrichment program involving a wide range of activities that enable children to experience Japanese culture to its fullest. Daily Japanese classes are part of our curriculum and we celebrate Japanese holidays and hold cultural events. For those who want the full dose, we even offer extra Japanese classes after school! 


Our curriculum is designed to be all-rounded, meaning physical activity is just as important as academics. In order to provide a healthy, safe, and stimulating environment for each child, Summerhill has on staff a professional gymnastics teacher who instructs basic gymnastics using equipment such as bars, balancing-beams, mats, hula-hoops, and the trampoline. Unless the weather disagrees, the children venture out on Fresh Air Walks, utilizing the three parks that are conveniently located minutes from us. For safety, children wear bright Summerhill smocks that can be easily identified.

Our Teaching Staff

Our role as a provider in early child-care is to complement the primary role of parental care. At the end of the day when you come to pick up your child, you'll find teachers eager to share the events of your child's day with you. From casual conversations, daily notes, and parent-teacher conferences to a standing invitation to drop in at any time of the day, we actively encourage communication between parents and teachers. We consider it a great honor when you entrust your child to us, and we take very seriously our commitment to have a significant and positive influence on the children in our school.

Exceptional teachers are the cornerstone of Summerhill, and we therefore require that all of our faculty have prior experience in early childhood education. Our head teachers are carefully selected on the basis of character and experience. The staff members speak English at a native level and represent a variety of countries, creating a truly international atmosphere.
